The De-Lurking Entry for Charity and Vanity
I’ve been wanting to write an entry like this for some time. And now I have a darn good reason!
I feel like the fantastic world of RSS and feed readers and have taken away from the joys of blogging. I love my Google reader. It does make things a lot easier and it’s the best way for me to easily share what I’m reading with everyone via my Links & Stuff feed in my sidebar. However, I also realize that I legitimately miss people’s blogs. I miss seeing if they’ve done a redesign or updated their sidebars and blogrolls. I also notice that I’m less likely to comment because it like, takes a few extra clicks, and well, I’m lazy. Lazy and getting lazier by the second.
I know I have readers out there. I know that there are people lurking and reading and telling my Dad how good a writer I am (Hi Ann!), but never commenting. I also have this thing? Called a stat counter? And it? Like counts when you hit my site. And I get more than 6 hits a day. Behold! The 6 regular comment leavers (bless them) are not all that exists.
I know it’s difficult to admit you read Pocklock. I know you might work with me and don’t want me to know that you’re reading in case I slip and write something awful about you. (By the way, I will never do that. I know better.) Maybe you’re an ex-boyfriend or ex-friend or an ex-whatever and you’re all, she can’t know that I read her site because if she knows then she’ll think I’m stalking her. Seriously? Get over it. I love being stalked.
So here’s what we’re going to do to bring you lurkers out of the woodwork and hopefully you’ll feel better and not like you have something to hide anymore. Get the monkey off your back. Ready?
Zoot, one of my most favorite bloggers in the ol’ sphere, is being arrested. For charity. And she needs bail money. She has a very lofty goal of $5000, but since she’s so damn popular and cute, she’ll have no problem making it. Me? If I did that? Y’all would leave me in there to rot. I know this. So instead of volunteering to be arrested myself and risking having to eat Spam, find God, and resort to hand writing in journals again, we’re just going to help Zoot. Here’s how. Get a pen.
- I’m donating $50 to Zoot’s cause on my own
- For every comment left on this entry or on any of my Flickr photos between now and September 4th, I will donate an additional $1 to Zoot’s bail
- For every comment left on this entry, I will match by $1 and send in the total proceeds.
So, if you’re the first person to leave a comment, that’s automatically $52 that will be donated. (Look! I did math!) The charity is specifically for Muscular Dystrophy Association and helps needy children. The money goes to research and summer camps and medical supplies among other things. I think every parents’ fear is that they could end up with a child that has a debilitating disease. Not only every parent, but for everyone who’s ever thought of being a parent, I bet the idea has crossed your mind. So let’s help this organization by doing something completely unselfish.
De-lurk. Say hi. Pop out of your Google Reader for a second. For the kids. And for Zoot! Because seriously? The lady gave up Diet Coke for God’s sake! Maybe we should send her some money for a CT-scan!

What a fantastic IDEA. I may use this. I have a very strong hunch that my grandfather has shared my blog with have of my home town….and not a commenter among them.

i’m confused — if she needs the money for bail, how will she get that money to earn for MD? i think i need to read her blog…still, i am commenting and hoping to raise some $$ for a good cause….

I don’t understand it and I would be pissed if someone did that to me (not that I have a problem with fundraisers/charity, it’s just that I’m poor and would have no way to get the funds).. But here is my comment anyway! Good luck..

I am the worst person in the world for taking so long to leave a comment here. In a tiny effort to save some grace, I’ll point out that I HAVE left other comments before… but of course this one is for charity and ergo actually has a greater good associated with it…. yea, I’m just a bad person.
